10-08-2026Why I Gave Up Social Media for a Month
A reflective essay on quitting social media for one month — what I learned about focus, real relationships, and mental health. B2 reading practice with third conditionals, passive voice, and reported speech.Lượt xem: 7 Nguồn: Daisy Việt
Six months ago, I made a decision that surprised everyone around me: I deleted every social media app from my phone for an entire month. At the time, I was spending nearly four hours a day scrolling through photos and videos that, looking back, I don't even remember.
When I told my friends about my plan, most of them said that I was making a mistake. One friend warned me directly: "You'll miss out on everything!" Despite their concerns, I was determined to see what life would be like without constant notifications pulling at my attention.
The first few days were harder than I had expected. I kept reaching for my phone out of habit, even though there was nothing left to check. Gradually, however, that urge began to fade, and I found myself with hours of free time that I hadn't even realized I was losing.
Instead of scrolling, I started reading books again, something I hadn't done properly in years. I also began meeting friends in person rather than simply liking their posts online. As a result, my relationships felt more genuine, and I slept better than I had in a long time.
If I hadn't taken that month away from social media, I would never have noticed how much it had been affecting my mood and concentration. Research has shown that excessive screen time is linked to higher levels of anxiety, and my own experience seemed to confirm this.
Nowadays, I still use social media occasionally, but I am far more mindful about it. Although it can be a valuable tool for staying connected, it should never replace real, face-to-face relationships. Sometimes the most useful thing you can do is simply switch off.
