Last month, my friend Nam invited me to an animal shelter. His aunt worked there, and she needed help with some simple jobs. Before our visit, she told us to wear old clothes and comfortable shoes.
When we arrived, several dogs were resting behind a fence. Some barked when they saw us. I wanted to touch them immediately, but Nam's aunt asked us to wait. She explained that some animals were nervous around new people.
First, we washed empty bowls in a small room. Nam dried them while I cleaned the table. While we were working, a little brown dog was watching us from the doorway. Its name was Bean. It did not come close at first.
Later, Nam's aunt showed us how to stand quietly near Bean. We did not reach over its head or pull it towards us. After a few minutes, Bean walked closer and smelled my shoe. I stayed still and spoke softly.
Bean was calmer than before. With his aunt's help, Nam took it for a short walk inside the shelter's exercise area. I carried a fresh bowl of water to the gate.
We stayed for two hours. Before we left, we put the clean bowls on a shelf. I thought helping animals meant playing with them all day. That visit taught me something different. Cleaning, waiting, and listening were important parts of the job too.
