The Mid-Autumn Festival, or Tết Trung Thu, takes place on the fifteenth day of the eighth lunar month, when the moon is at its brightest. It is a special festival for children in Vietnam. Last year's festival was the most exciting one for me.
A week before the festival, my grandmother helped me make a star lantern. We cut thin pieces of bamboo, tied them into a star shape, and covered it with red paper. It took us three evenings, but my lantern was more beautiful than any lantern in the shop.
On the night of the festival, all the children in my neighborhood met in front of the community house. We were carrying lanterns of every color and shape: stars, fish, rabbits, and even dragons. Some older boys were beating drums while a lion dance group performed in the street. The noise was loud, but everyone was laughing and cheering.
After the parade, our parents put out a big tray of food. There were mooncakes, pomelos, and many kinds of fruit. My favorite was the mooncake with lotus seeds and a salted egg yolk inside. My little cousin preferred the one with green beans because it was sweeter.
Later, we sat together and looked at the full moon. My grandmother told us the story of Chú Cuội, a man who lives on the moon under a big banyan tree.
That night, I went to bed late, but I was very happy. I can't wait for this year's festival!
