Why I Started Volunteering at an Animal Shelter

Two years ago, I had never thought about volunteering. My life was busy with school and part-time jobs, and I believed I did not have any free time to give to others.

Everything changed when a friend, who had been volunteering at a local animal shelter for months, invited me to visit on a weekend. I agreed mostly because I did not want to disappoint her, not because I was interested in animals.

When I arrived, I saw dozens of dogs and cats that had been abandoned by their owners. Some of them had been living on the street before someone brought them to the shelter. One small dog, who had lost part of his ear, walked slowly toward me and rested his head on my leg.

Since that first visit, I have gone back to the shelter almost every weekend. I have learned how to bathe the animals, clean their cages, and even help new volunteers who have just joined. If I had not agreed to go that day, I would probably still believe that I had no time for anyone but myself.

Volunteering has taught me that kindness does not require a lot of time — it only requires a decision to start. Whenever I feel tired after a long week, I remember the dog with the torn ear, and I know exactly where I want to be.
