A Partner with a Different Plan

When our teacher announced a local history project, I immediately made a detailed plan. I wanted to finish the research early and prepare neat slides. My partner, Minh, had a different idea: he wanted to interview people before deciding what our project would say.

I had already written an outline before we met. When Minh suggested changing it, I felt annoyed. I thought interviews would take too much time. He thought my plan would produce a project that sounded like a textbook.

Instead of arguing, we asked our teacher for advice. She suggested that we test both approaches with one small topic. We chose the old cinema near our school. I searched for information about the building, while Minh arranged a conversation with a shop owner nearby.

The shop owner, who had lived on that street for years, showed us an old photograph. It helped us understand how the area had changed. My research provided dates, but her memories explained why the cinema mattered to local families.

If we combine our ideas, we will make a better project. That was the conclusion we reached after comparing our notes. We kept my schedule but left room for interviews. Minh also agreed to write down his questions in advance.

We have not become identical workers, and that is probably a good thing. I still like clear plans, while he enjoys discovering unexpected details. Now we know how to use both habits instead of treating one of them as a problem.
