Last Friday night, the electricity in my whole neighborhood suddenly went out, right in the middle of a video call I had been having with my best friend abroad. At first, I was just annoyed — I had planned to finish an online course that night.

Within a few minutes, my phone battery, which had already been low all day, died completely. Suddenly, there was nothing to do except sit in the dark with my family, something we hadn’t done together in years.

My father, who has always been too busy for long conversations, started telling stories about his own childhood, back when power cuts like this had happened almost every week. My little sister, who had never experienced a real blackout before, kept asking questions, fascinated by a world without endless screens.

We ended up talking for almost three hours by candlelight. I have had many “productive” evenings in front of my laptop, but few of them have felt as meaningful as that dark, quiet night.

When the lights finally came back on, nobody rushed to grab their phones. For once, technology had lost, if only for one evening — and I have never forgotten how good that silence felt.
