Every year before Tet, I take an overnight bus back to my hometown, and every year, I promise myself it will be different this time. It never is.
This year, I had already bought my ticket two weeks in advance, hoping to avoid the last-minute crowds. But when I arrived at the bus station, hundreds of people, who had clearly had the same idea, were already waiting with enormous bags of gifts for their families.
I have taken this same night bus more than ten times now, and I have never once managed to sleep properly on it. The seats are too small, the driver stops every hour, and someone always seems to be eating instant noodles at 3 a.m.
Still, there is something I have come to love about this uncomfortable journey. When the bus finally enters my home province, and the first rice fields appear in the early morning light, all the tiredness disappears immediately. If I ever have to choose between a comfortable flight and this exhausting bus ride, I will always choose the bus — because somehow, the journey itself has become part of coming home.
By the time I reach my front door, my mother has usually already prepared a hot bowl of phở, as if she had known exactly when I would arrive.
