The Day I Volunteered to Clean Up the Beach

Two weekends ago, I joined a group of volunteers who had organized a beach clean-up in my hometown. I had never done anything like this before, so I honestly didn’t know what to expect.

When we arrived, the beach, which had looked beautiful in every photo I had seen online, was actually covered in plastic bottles, cigarette butts, and old fishing nets. I felt a strange mixture of sadness and determination as I picked up my first bag.

By midday, our small team, most of whom had never met each other before that morning, had already collected more than fifty bags of rubbish. An elderly fisherman, who had been watching us from his boat, came over and thanked us — he said he had fished on this beach for over thirty years and had never seen young people care about it this much.

I have joined a few volunteer activities since that day, but none of them has left the same impression on me. I have realized that real change often starts with something as small as picking up one piece of plastic at a time.

If more people had seen what I saw that morning, I believe far fewer beaches in Vietnam would look the way ours did before we arrived.
