The Recipe Notebook We Almost Lost

Our family has kept a handwritten recipe notebook for many years. It belonged to my grandmother, who wrote down dishes she cooked for birthdays and ordinary Sunday lunches. I used to think the notebook was simply a list of ingredients.

Last month, we were moving some furniture when my father found it behind a cupboard. Someone had put it there during a kitchen repair. A few pages were loose, and one corner was covered in dust. My grandmother looked relieved when we showed it to her.

I suggested typing the recipes into a document. At first, she was unsure because some instructions were difficult to explain. One recipe said only, 'Add enough water.' Another told the cook to wait until the mixture looked right.

We decided to cook one dish together each weekend. While she worked, I measured the ingredients and asked questions. I also recorded the stories connected to each dish. A simple soup reminded her of a neighbour who had helped our family during a difficult winter.

If I lost the notebook, I would miss the stories most. That is why our digital copy includes photographs of the original pages and short notes about the people mentioned in them. We still keep the paper notebook in a safe drawer.

The project is taking longer than I expected, but I no longer want to rush it. I have learned that a family recipe can explain much more than how to prepare a meal.
