The Broken Lamp on Our Street

I have walked past the small repair shop on our street for years. Until recently, I never went inside. When something stopped working at home, I usually thought about buying a replacement rather than asking whether it could be repaired.

That changed when my desk lamp broke. It was a present from my older sister, so I did not want to throw it away. My mother suggested taking it to the shop instead of trying to fix an electrical problem myself.

The owner examined the lamp while I watched from the other side of his workbench. He had unplugged it before he opened the base. He explained that a damaged switch was causing the problem. I understood only part of his explanation, but I liked the care he took with a small, ordinary object.

He gave us a price before doing the repair. My mother agreed, and we returned the next afternoon. The lamp worked again. Its shade still had a little scratch, but that did not matter to me.

If another appliance breaks, I will ask about repair first. Of course, not everything can be repaired safely or at a reasonable price. I have learned to ask questions rather than assume that every broken object is useless.

At home, the lamp is back on my desk. When I switch it on, I remember my sister choosing it for me. Repairing it saved an object that already belonged in my life, and that felt different from bringing home something new.
