Why I Decided to Learn a Third Language

Two years ago, I was fluent in Vietnamese and reasonably confident in English, and I honestly believed that was enough. If I hadn’t met a French backpacker at a hostel in Hoi An, I probably would never have thought about learning a third language at all.

That evening, she told me that she had learned four languages simply by talking to strangers, one conversation at a time. I remember thinking that if she had grown up in a small city like mine, she wouldn’t have had the same opportunities — but she quickly proved me wrong. She explained that most of her vocabulary had actually been picked up from podcasts and language exchange apps, not from expensive classes or living abroad.

I was told by almost everyone around me that learning Japanese at twenty-five was pointless, and that a third language should have been started in childhood. For a while, I was almost convinced by that advice. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized that this belief was rarely questioned, even though it wasn’t really true.

So I signed up for an online course, and within three months, simple conversations that had once seemed impossible were being handled by me with surprising ease. My friends had warned me that motivation would fade after the first few weeks, and in most cases, they were right about other people. But this time, something different happened: every small success was quickly followed by an even bigger goal, and quitting was never seriously considered. If I had listened to everyone who doubted me, this progress would never have been made.

Looking back, I sometimes wonder what would have happened if that French backpacker hadn’t sat down next to me that night. Would I still be telling myself that two languages were enough? Probably. Instead, a habit that has completely changed how I see learning itself was accidentally started by one random conversation — proof that sometimes the most important lessons arrive when we least expect them.
