Why I Gave Up Fast Food for a Month
Speed:

If someone had told me a year ago that I would give up fast food for an entire month, I would have laughed. Back then, fried chicken and instant noodles were eaten almost every day, and I never thought there was anything wrong with that.

The change began after a routine health check, when the doctor told me that my cholesterol had been rising steadily for the past two years. She explained that if I continued eating the same way, more serious health problems could develop within a few years. I was shocked, because I had always believed that being young meant I could eat anything without consequences.

For the first week, meals were planned carefully, and every ingredient was checked before it was cooked. Rice was replaced with more vegetables, and sugary drinks were replaced with water and fresh juice. It was harder than I expected — old habits, which had been formed over many years, were not easy to break.

Eating out with friends was the hardest part to change. Whenever we met at our favorite fried chicken restaurant, I had to explain, again and again, why I was suddenly ordering grilled fish or a salad instead. Some friends teased me at first, but a few of them admitted that they had also been thinking about eating more healthily.

By the third week, something surprising happened: I no longer craved fried food the way I used to. My mother told me that I looked healthier, and that my skin had even improved. If I hadn't pushed through those difficult first two weeks, I would never have discovered how much better I could feel.

Since that month, fast food has become an occasional treat rather than a daily habit. I still remember what the doctor said, and I am grateful that one warning was enough to change the way I live.

Grammar Structure

1. Third Conditional
Formula: If + S + had + V3, S + would have + V3
Usage: Expresses an imagined outcome of a past situation that did not happen.
Example: "If I hadn't pushed through those difficult first two weeks, I would never have discovered how much better I could feel."

2. Passive Voice
Formula: S + be + V3
Usage: Emphasizes the action or object rather than who performed it.
Example: "For the first week, meals were planned carefully, and every ingredient was checked before it was cooked."

3. Reported Speech
Formula: S + told + O + (that) + clause
Usage: Reports what someone said without quoting their exact words.
Example: "My mother told me that I looked healthier, and that my skin had even improved."
