What I Wish I Had Known Before Studying Abroad

When I left for university in Australia three years ago, I honestly believed that being fluent in English would be enough to handle anything. I wish someone had told me just how wrong that assumption was.

If I had known how differently academic writing is taught here compared to in Vietnam, I would have prepared for it properly instead of panicking the night before my first essay was due. My essay was returned covered in comments about “critical thinking,” a concept that had barely been explained to me back home.

I also wish I had understood how much homesickness would affect my studies. During my first semester, simple tasks that had once seemed effortless were suddenly being completed twice as slowly, simply because my mind was constantly elsewhere. If I had reached out to the university’s support services sooner, a lot of unnecessary stress could have been avoided entirely.

Perhaps the biggest lesson, though, is one that wasn’t taught in any orientation session: independence isn’t built overnight. It is shaped slowly, through hundreds of small mistakes — burnt meals, missed deadlines, awkward conversations in a second language — each one quietly turning a nervous eighteen-year-old into someone far more capable than she ever thought she could be.

If I could go back and speak to my first-week self, I wouldn’t tell her to be less scared. I would simply tell her that everything she was about to struggle through would eventually be worth it.
