Silence Taught Me More Than Words Ever Could

For most of my life, I believed that the best communicators were the ones who always had something to say. It wasn’t until I spent a week at a silent meditation retreat that I began to question that belief entirely.

On the first day, we were asked not to speak at all — not to each other, not even to ourselves in our heads if we could help it. Although this sounded simple in theory, it turned out to be one of the most uncomfortable experiences I have ever put myself through. Every instinct in my body wanted to fill the silence with something, anything.

By the third day, something unexpected happened. Because I could no longer rely on conversation to distract myself, I started noticing things I had never paid attention to before — the sound of my own breathing, the exact moment a thought turned into an emotion, the way tension was being held in my shoulders without me even realizing it.

When one of the retreat leaders finally spoke again on the last morning, every word she said felt unusually heavy, as if it had been carefully chosen rather than simply spoken out of habit. I realized then that most of my daily conversations were filled with words that meant almost nothing, said mainly to avoid the discomfort of silence itself.

Since that week, I haven’t become a quiet person exactly, but I have learned that silence isn’t empty. Sometimes, it says more than any sentence I could ever construct.
