How I Stopped Being Late for Everything

For most of my life, I have been the person who arrives late. I have missed buses, trains, and even the first ten minutes of my best friend's wedding. My friends used to joke that if they wanted me to arrive at seven, they should tell me the party started at six.

For a long time, I thought being late was just part of my personality. Then, last year, something happened that changed my mind. I had applied for a job that I really wanted, and the company invited me to an interview. I left home with what I believed was plenty of time, but the traffic was terrible. By the time I arrived, the manager had already started interviewing the next candidate. I didn't get the job.

That evening, I sat down and asked myself an honest question: why am I always late? The answer surprised me. The problem wasn't the traffic or bad luck. The problem was that I always underestimated how long things take. I believed I could shower, get dressed, and eat breakfast in fifteen minutes, when in reality it usually took me forty.

Since then, I have made three small changes. First, I time my daily activities, so I know how long they really take. Second, I prepare everything I need the night before, including my clothes and my bag. Third, I plan to arrive ten minutes early instead of exactly on time. If something goes wrong on the way, those ten minutes give me a buffer.

These changes sound simple, but they have made a huge difference. I haven't been late for work for six months, and I feel much calmer in the mornings. If I were still the old me, I would probably be running for the bus right now.

Being on time isn't really about clocks. It is about respecting other people, and respecting yourself.
