My First Job Interview: What I Learned

Last month, I had my very first job interview, and I was more nervous than I have ever been in my life. I arrived thirty minutes early because I was terrified that something would go wrong on the way.

The interviewer, who had read my CV very carefully, asked me questions I hadn’t prepared for at all. When she asked, “Why should we hire you?”, my mind went completely blank for a few seconds. I have never felt so unprepared in my life, even though I had practiced answers in front of a mirror the night before.

Halfway through the interview, I realized something important: if I keep pretending to know everything, the interviewer will notice immediately. So instead, I decided to be honest. I told her that I hadn’t used that particular software before, but that I have always learned new skills quickly whenever I needed to.

To my surprise, she smiled and said that this kind of honesty is exactly what most companies are looking for. We ended the interview with a friendly conversation about my hobbies, which made me feel far more relaxed than I had at the start.

I still don’t know if I have got the job, but one thing has already changed: I have learned that if you stay honest during an interview, you will always walk out feeling proud of yourself, no matter what the final answer is.
