The Day We Built a Book Corner

On Friday, our teacher asked us to look at an empty corner of the classroom. There were two old boxes and a broken chair there. She wanted to make a place where we could read during our lunch break.

We worked in small groups. My group cleaned the floor and moved the boxes. Another group brought books from the school library. While we were cleaning the corner, our teacher checked the old chair. It was not safe, so she took it away.

My friend Hoa brought a small carpet from home. Her family did not need it anymore. Two other students made colourful signs. I wrote the words 'Our Book Corner' on a large piece of paper. My writing was a little uneven, but everyone liked the sign.

We could sit on the carpet and read together. However, we needed a place for the books. Our teacher found a low shelf in another room. Four students helped her carry it carefully. We put the books on the shelf with their covers facing us.

At lunchtime, I chose a short story about a dog. Hoa sat beside me and read a book about space. The corner felt much quieter than the playground.

Before we left school, we agreed on one simple rule: return each book to its place. Our new corner was small, but we made it together. That made it special.
