I have travelled to many busy cities, but nothing prepared me for the traffic in Hanoi. On my first evening in the Old Quarter, I stood at the edge of the road for almost ten minutes, watching a river of motorbikes that never seemed to stop. There were no traffic lights and no gaps. I wondered how anyone ever got to the other side.
Then an old woman who was selling bananas from a bicycle noticed me. She smiled, took my arm, and simply started walking. To my surprise, the motorbikes flowed around us like water around a stone. Nobody hit us, and nobody even seemed annoyed.
Later, my Vietnamese friend Thu explained the secret. "The most important rule is to walk slowly and steadily," she said. "Drivers here are very good at predicting where you will be. If you walk at the same speed, they will go around you. If you stop suddenly or run, they won't know what to do, and that's when accidents happen."
She also taught me to make eye contact with the drivers and to raise my hand a little, which tells them that you are crossing. It sounded crazy, but the next day I tried it on my own. My heart was beating fast, but I reached the other side safely.
Since that day, I have crossed hundreds of streets in Hanoi, and it has become one of my favourite parts of the city. Crossing the road here is not about fighting the traffic. It is about trusting it, moving with it, and being patient. In a way, it taught me something about Vietnamese life: it looks chaotic from the outside, but it has its own quiet rhythm.
