Rarely has a technology been adopted as rapidly, and with as little public debate about its consequences, as artificial intelligence has been over the past decade. Embedded quietly into everyday applications — from the recommendations shown on a shopping app to the way a résumé is filtered before a human ever reads it — AI now shapes decisions that were once made entirely by people.

Trained on enormous datasets scraped from the internet, these systems inevitably absorb the biases already present within that data. A hiring algorithm, developed to save companies time, may therefore end up disadvantaging certain candidates simply because historical data reflected patterns of discrimination that had existed long before the algorithm was built. Not only can such bias go unnoticed for years, but it can also be extremely difficult to prove once identified, since the decision-making process itself is frequently hidden inside what is often described as a “black box.”

Seldom do the companies deploying these systems face the same level of accountability that a human decision-maker would. When a loan application is rejected or a job candidate is filtered out, those affected are rarely given a clear explanation, partly because the reasoning behind the decision may not even be fully understood by the engineers who built the system.

Faced with these concerns, some governments have begun drafting regulations requiring greater transparency in automated decision-making. Whether such regulation can keep pace with a technology evolving this quickly, however, remains deeply uncertain.

What seems increasingly clear is that convenience alone cannot be allowed to justify the unchecked expansion of systems capable of shaping human lives without being fully understood, even by those who create them.
