Watching Birds Without Chasing Them

Since joining our school nature group, I have learned to notice birds in ordinary places. Before that, I thought birdwatching meant travelling to a distant forest with expensive equipment. Our first meeting took place in the small park beside the library.

Our group leader asked us to stand quietly near a path. We shared a pair of binoculars and kept a notebook for observations. At first, I wanted to move closer whenever I saw a bird. However, the birds often flew away before I could see much.

Then a classmate showed me a better approach. She chose one comfortable place and waited. A small bird, which was carrying a dry leaf, landed on a branch nearby. We watched it without following it into the bushes.

If we chased every bird, we would probably see less. Waiting gave the birds time to return to their normal activities. We wrote down what we actually observed instead of guessing what each movement meant. When we could not identify a bird, we drew its shape and checked a guide later.

We have also agreed to keep our distance from nests and avoid playing recorded bird calls. Our aim is to observe animals without disturbing them. A clear view is pleasant, but it is not worth making an animal uncomfortable.

Now I sometimes spend ten quiet minutes in the park after school. I do not always see an unusual bird. Still, I usually notice something that I would have missed while looking at my phone.
