Last December, my family and I took a trip to the Mekong Delta in southern Vietnam. We stayed in Cần Thơ, the biggest city in the region.
On the second day, we woke up at five o'clock in the morning to visit the Cái Răng floating market. It was still dark when we got on a small wooden boat. The river was quiet, and the air was cooler than in the afternoon.
When we arrived, the market was already busy. Hundreds of boats were selling fruit, vegetables, and food. Each boat hung its products on a tall pole, so buyers could see what it was selling from far away. One boat had pineapples on its pole, and another had pumpkins.
While we were watching the boats, a woman paddled next to us. She was selling hot noodle soup from her boat! We ordered three bowls and ate breakfast on the water. It was one of the best meals of the trip.
After the market, our guide took us through narrow canals. Coconut trees grew on both sides, and their leaves almost touched the water. We stopped at a small village and watched people make coconut candy. The candy was sweet and chewy, so my sister bought five bags.
The Mekong Delta was very different from my busy city. Life there was slower and more peaceful. I hope I can go back there one day.
