What Is Áo Dài?

The áo dài is a traditional Vietnamese dress. "Áo" means "shirt", and "dài" means "long". So the áo dài is a long shirt. People wear it with long trousers.

The áo dài has two long parts, one in the front and one in the back. It comes in many colors: white, red, yellow, blue, and pink.

Many high school girls in Vietnam wear a white áo dài to school. They look very elegant when they ride their bikes in the morning.

Women often wear the áo dài at weddings and at Tết, the Lunar New Year. Men can wear it too. A man's áo dài is usually plain and simple.

Tourists love the áo dài. Many of them visit a tailor in Hội An or Hà Nội. The tailor measures their body and makes a new áo dài for them in one or two days.

For many Vietnamese people, the áo dài is a symbol of beauty and culture.
