A Weekend Trip to Hội An

I had heard about Hội An for years before I finally visited it last autumn, and I had always imagined it as just another tourist town filled with souvenir shops. I could not have been more wrong.

We arrived in the late afternoon, when the ancient town was still quiet. The old houses, which had been built more than two hundred years ago, lined narrow streets that were closed to cars. My friend, who had visited before, told me that the town had been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site because so much of its original architecture had been preserved.

As the sun went down, hundreds of colorful lanterns were lit along the river, and their light was reflected on the water. Local vendors sold small paper lanterns that were meant to be released onto the river for good luck. I was told that each lantern represented a wish, and that letting it float away meant the wish had been sent into the world.

Before we left the next morning, we also tried "cao lầu," a noodle dish that, according to my friend, cannot be made properly anywhere outside Hội An because it depends on water from a specific local well. Whether or not that story was completely true, the noodles were unlike anything we had eaten during the rest of our trip.

If we had stayed for only one day, as we originally planned, we would never have experienced the town at night, when it felt completely different from the crowded daytime streets. Sitting by the river, surrounded by soft light and quiet conversation, I understood why so many travelers described Hội An as unforgettable.

Since that trip, whenever I see a paper lantern, I am reminded of the river, the light, and the feeling that some places are not just visited, but remembered forever.
