A Weekend Trip to Hoi An: Vietnam's Ancient Town
Speed:

Last month, I visited Hoi An, a small town in central Vietnam that has become one of the country's most popular destinations. I had heard about its beautiful lanterns for years, but I had never seen them with my own eyes until that weekend.

My friend and I arrived on Saturday afternoon and walked straight to the Ancient Town, which was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1999. The streets there are narrow, and most of the houses are more than a hundred years old. Many of them used to belong to Chinese and Japanese merchants who settled in Hoi An hundreds of years ago.

As the sun went down, something magical happened. Every shop turned off its electric lights and hung colorful silk lanterns outside instead. Local people, who have kept this tradition alive for generations, say that lantern light makes the old houses look even more beautiful at night. We floated small paper lanterns on the river, just like many visitors before us have done.

The next morning, we tried banh mi and cao lau, a noodle dish that you can only find in Hoi An because it needs water from a special local well. If you ever visit Vietnam, you should not leave without tasting cao lau at least once — it is completely different from noodle dishes in other regions.

By the time we left on Sunday evening, I understood why so many travelers fall in love with Hoi An. It is a place where the past and the present exist together, and where a simple walk down an old street can feel like stepping back in time.

Grammar Focus

  • Past Perfect (had + V3) — for something that happened before another past moment: "I had heard about its beautiful lanterns for years, but I had never seen them with my own eyes until that weekend."
  • Relative Clauses (who / which) — to add extra information about a noun: "The Ancient Town, which was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1999..." and "...merchants who settled in Hoi An hundreds of years ago."
  • First Conditional (If + present simple, ... should/will + verb) — for realistic advice: "If you ever visit Vietnam, you should not leave without tasting cao lau at least once."
