The Umbrella and the Rain

Anna worked in a large office in the city. Every day, she followed the same route. She walked to the train station, rode the train for thirty minutes, and then walked to her desk. She did not talk to many people. She was shy and always felt like a stranger in the crowd.

One Tuesday, the sky turned grey. Suddenly, rain began to fall very hard. Anna had a large, bright blue umbrella. She opened it and started walking.

Near the station, she saw an old woman. The woman had no umbrella. She was standing under a small tree, trying to stay dry, but her clothes were already wet. She looked cold and tired.

Anna stopped. Usually, she was too shy to speak, but she felt a connection to the woman.

"Excuse me," Anna said. "Would you like to walk with me? My umbrella is big enough for two."

The old woman looked up and smiled. "That is very kind of you, dear. Thank you."

As they walked together, the woman told Anna stories about the city fifty years ago. She talked about the old shops and the music in the streets. Anna listened and laughed. For the first time, she forgot to be shy.

When they reached the woman's house, the rain stopped. "You gave me more than just a dry coat, Anna," the woman said. "You gave me a friend."

Anna walked back to the station. The sky was still grey, but she felt warm inside. She realized that a small act of kindness could change a lonely day into a beautiful one.
