The Old Man and the Little Tree

Ben was a very old man. He lived in a quiet house with a small garden. Every morning, Ben sat on his porch and watched the street. He did not talk to many people. His best friend was a little bird that came to eat seeds every day.

One spring, a little girl named Lily moved into the house next door. Lily loved to run and play. When she saw Ben, she smiled and waved. Ben just nodded his head.

Lily saw that Ben’s garden had only old brown grass. She decided to help. One day, she walked over to Ben’s porch. She was holding a small green tree in a pot.

"Hello, Mr. Ben," Lily said. "My mom bought this tree. She said I can plant it. Do you want to help me?"

Ben looked at the tree. He remembered his own grandmother’s garden. He nodded. "Yes," he said. "I can help."

They planted the tree together in a sunny spot. Lily brought a colorful watering can. Every day, they met at the little tree. Ben taught Lily how to take care of the soil. Lily told Ben stories about her school and her friends.
