Advice of the goat

High up on a rocky mountain, where the air is thin and the paths are dangerous, lived an old goat named Barnaby. Barnaby had climbed every peak and survived many harsh winters. All the younger animals came to him when they didn't know which path to take.

One day, a young, ambitious mountain goat named Pip was rushing down a narrow trail. He was in a hurry to reach the green grass in the valley. In his way was a small, injured bird that had fallen from its nest and was struggling on the rocks.

Pip was about to push the bird aside with his heavy hoofs so he could pass quickly.

"Wait, young one," Barnaby called out from a ledge above.

Pip looked up. "I'm in a hurry, Barnaby! This bird is blocking the fastest way down."

Barnaby slowly walked down to Pip. "The mountain is big enough for everyone, Pip. Strength is not about how fast you can run, but how much mercy you can show."

Barnaby leaned down and used his nose to gently move a few sharp stones, creating a safer space for the bird. "Listen to my advice," the old goat said. "If you can, help others. Perhaps you can stay for a moment and guard this bird until its mother returns."

Pip looked at the valley below, then at the tiny bird. He felt guilty. "But I don't know how to fix a wing," Pip admitted.

"That is fine," Barnaby replied. "If you cannot help, at least do not harm them. If you cannot fix the wing, simply do not step on it. You do not need to be a hero every day, but you should never be the cause of someone else's suffering."

Pip understood. He didn't have any medicine, and he wasn't a doctor, but he decided to sit quietly by the bird, shielding it from the cold wind with his thick fur until help arrived. He realized that the "right move" wasn't the fastest one—it was the one that left the world a little better.

The Moral of the Story

"If you can, help others. If you cannot do that, at least do not harm them."
