Benzei, the great Zen teacher, had many pupils.
One day, one of them was caught stealing and reported to Benzei. However, Benzei took no action against the boy.
A few day later, the same boy was caught stealing again, and like the last time, Benzei did no punish him.
This greatly angered the other students, prompting them to draw up a petition, which asked for the dismissal of the thief. Tired of the constant robberies, all the students threatened to leave if the boy was allowed to continue to stay.
After hearing of their complaints, Benzei called an urgent meeting with all his students. Assembled together in front him, Benzei spoke with a clear and gentle voice: "My students, you are good boys. I have taught you what is right anh what is wrong. If you do decide to leave, I have no doubt that you will have no trouble in joining another school. However, I ask you yo consider your brother, whom does not know the defference betwen rigth and wrong. Who will teach him if I don't? Thus, I sincerely must inform you that I cannot ask him to leave, even if it does mean losing all of you."
Tears coursed down the cheeks of all Benzei's students, including the undisciplined pupli. Benzei's words had touched the hearts of all his students. The student, whom had not known right from wrong, never stole again and years later, became renowned for his integrity.
